Although, I do think Strides of Heresy is excellent for Rex, but it's up to personal preference or how powerful the run is whether to pick it up. For what it is worth, at least 100 of my hours in game have been with him so I've tested everything described pretty thoroughly. The shove trick requires the right situations but is so powerful in those it is broken. If you are still skeptical play him with these tricks in mind. His healing relied more on his abilities to begin with (Also that regen drop was patched today: sweet). Worth noting in this section, REX was also the only character who's gameplay I did not need to adjust for the Skills 2.0 health regen drop. If you are worried you are getting a bit low, just use a well timed R and pullback from the fray. And using M1 alongside M2 reduces the drain M2 exerts. The r ability is insane on later levels, allowing nearly instantaneous healing. REX needs very few healing items (I'd stick with a few slugs). Healing items are the least important for REX: He heals himself just fine I saw one redditor arguing REX desperately needed leaching seed in his runs. This said, you shouldn't be pushing front line with REX. the fact that you can quickly recover health while pinning large groups means you can just spam mortar with little worry of health issues. REX is pretty good at crowd control The r ability coupled with M2 bombardment can make very quick work off of grunt enemies and can also do a number on boss groups. Combined with hardlight afterburner you have mobility greater than anyone else, even when they have hardlight (the momentum stacks). With practice it is effectively a second jump with the bonus of shoving opponents. Furthermore, flying enemies such as jellyfish and lesser wisps (greater not affected) can be shoved into a wall for an insta kill! (momentum damage applies there) Additionally, that shift (after a jump or while falling) gives REX a mobility advantage early on over MUL-T and Engineer. (The r ability also can pull any enemies the shift can shove!). And most "horde of many" bosses share this weakness. I have singlehandedly killed 5 Dunestriders this way on the desert map. In addition, 2 bosses (Dunestriders and Grovetenders) can also be shoved. Almost any non boss can be shoved by this, including off a cliff for an instant kill. Its all in the shift shove REX's shift at first seems like it doesn't do much. Allow me to explain why, after some practice, you will quickly realize he is one of the strongest characters in the game. Many people seem to think REX is one of the worst characters out there.
